Project Battambang

love above all else

Project Battambang is an overseas community service project organized by students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. The project was created in response to the ongoing struggles of the people in Poipet, Cambodia.

This project is dedicated to providing free, comprehensive health screenings and education to the underprivileged in Poipet, the second poorest province in all of Cambodia.

ABOUT

Our Roots

Project Battambang was created in response to the ongoing struggles of the people in the rural districts of Cambodia. In 2010, five Year Two medical students, mentored by Dr Ong Yew Jin, recruited a team of 25 medical students and started serving the district of Poipet in the Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia, where they identified a great need for proper healthcare and education services.

Our team aims to supplement local primary healthcare services by conducting health screenings, while concurrently developing sustainable healthcare programmes for the community. To supplement the screenings, our team introduced health education programmes to impart vital healthcare knowledge to the locals.

In 2011, the team implemented a survey process to evaluate the effectiveness and relevance of our initiatives. Besides these, Project Battambang also decided to capitalize on the talents of Cambodian students and develop them through scholarships and teacher support programmes.

Today, Project Battambang reaches out to 4 villages in the rural areas of Poipet. Through new partnerships and collaborations, Project Battambang seeks to develop local health support infrastructure in villages and grow its scholarship programme in schools, in the years to come.

Education & Outreach

Project Battambang stands by the wholehearted belief that education is a lifelong process, and a major cornerstone of improving universal standards of living. Quality education enables individuals to acquire the knowledge and proficiencies needed for higher-skilled occupations that provide better income and self-sufficiency. We aim to deliver sustainable, year-round aid through 3 main initiatives, namely:

  1. Light-A-Dream Scholarship

  2. School Support Programme

  3. Health Education

Health Screening

With the high costs of healthcare and lack of access to healthcare providers in Poipet, many villagers are unable to obtain treatment for even the most basic ailments such as coughs and the common cold. Project Battambang seeks to bring healthcare to people through mass village screenings and door-to-door screenings. We conduct health screenings in 4 different villages: Oresai Ler, Prey Kup, Tom Nub Kor Pram and Pum Pikar.

Survey

We conduct surveys alongside our screenings to determine the health seeking behaviour and needs of the villagers we serve, in the hope that we can be of better help to them in the future. We adopt a variety of methods to gather both qualitative and quantitative data; such as Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) surveys and Door-to-Door groundwork.
